Man United fire warning to Jose Mourinho over January transfer window
Manchester United’s transfer policy being played out in the media
Once again, Manchester United lost a big game and it feels like the club is in a crisis.
Jose Mourinho should be applauded for his efforts in making sure Manchester United look like Manchester City’s likely title challengers.
Yet there are clearly plenty of competing opinions and feelings at play within the Manchester United hierarchy and for Mourinho himself.
Jose Mourinho linked with PSG again
On Monday, just hours after Manchester United’s loss at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho was linked with PSG again.
With Unai Emery and Brazilian superstar Neymar not seeing eye to eye, it seems inevitable that the Spaniard will be replaced at the end of 2017/2018.
The report from the Manchester Evening News was very clear, Jose Mourinho has no intention of leaving for PSG, but he wants more backing in the transfer market.
Man United: Jose Mourinho needs to sell before he can buy
Mourinho is clearly agitated that the “noisy neighbours” Manchester City and his great rival Pep Guardiola have spent more than United in recent transfer windows.
However, the word coming from Manchester United today is that Mourinho needs to sell before he can buy.
This verdict is delivered by Simon Stone, a journalist with good contacts at Manchester United.
The BBC reporter writes: “Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will be told to offload players if he wants to add to his squad in January. The Old Trafford board want to control costs before sanctioning more outlay on new signings.”
Luke Shaw & Marouane Fellaini offloaded in January?
Stone also points out that “Mourinho has spent £285m on transfer fees on six major signings during his two years at the club. United’s most recent financial results, released in September, showed their wage bill had risen by 13.5% to £263.5m.”
Only two current Manchester United squad members are mentioned in the article on the BBC website: Luke Shaw and Marouane Fellaini.
Shaw now seems certain to leave in January after injury problems and failing to generate trust from Mourinho.
Fellaini is a favourite of Mourinho but is out of contract at the end of 2017/2018.
Is Mourinho pushing for a new Man United deal?
Jose Mourinho is contracted to Manchester United until 2019 and has been in talks over a new deal with a year’s extension.
As it stands, Mourinho’s new deal at Manchester United has not been announced, despite plenty of reports that it is agreed.
It will be intriguing to see whether Manchester United make moves in the winter transfer window. By the day, this is becoming a major topic regarding the future of Mourinho.
If Manchester City extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, Mourinho’s position could become more uncomfortable.
