Thinking globally, acting locally: The TECNO Mobile example
While the battle for dominance in the mobile phone ecosystem heightens in the Nigerian market and in Africa as a whole, every Original Equipment Manufacturer, OEM, operating in the region knows quite well that brand development through innovative technologies is important for success story.
In this interview with EMEKA AGINAM, Mr. Arif Chowdhury, the Vice President of Transsion Holdings, a group that owns different brands, such as TECNO Mobile while telling the success story of the OEMs as the fasted growing mobile device in the country said that TECNO Mobile is not left out in the universal trend of unique brand development, high quality product offerings, affordability and improvement.

MARKET share: TECNO Mobile is now among the TOP 3 mobile phone brand in Nigeria. We received several awards for quality of our products and services.
TECNO Mobile offerings in mobile voice and data technologies which include: smart phones, tablets and feature phones ranges enjoy huge popularity and adoption in Africa owing to its unique offering of Dual-SIM enabled mobile devices at a time it barely controlled less than 1% of the total market share in mobile devices original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with shops in African.
Why dual SIM technology
We brought Dual SIM in this market, because it was an important need, instead of asking our customers to buy two phones, we give them the Dual SIM solution. And this is what is important to understand, TECNO Mobile is always answering the Nigerians needs and they choose dual SIM.
Manufacturing plant
TCNO Mobile actually doesn’t have one factory, but several factories. We are building one in Nigeria currently which is expected to create employment in the country.

Think globally, act locally. Our headquarter is in Hong-Kong. Our mobile are designed by a French team. Our mobile phones are made in China just like all known mobile phone manufacturers, and when it comes to products and the decision for future products it is a local strategy.
The product is imagined by Nigerians. TECNO mobile care about the customers and our strategy is always in line with customer needs. If we decide to produce a new high technology smartphone with a front flash camera 8mp, it is not actually our decision but the customers decision. Furthermore, Nigeria is a special market for us. We particularly appreciate this market, and we have a special relation with Nigerians.
Between TECNO Mobile and other top brands in Nigeria
TECNO Mobile has always been creating innovative products in the market. The latest one is called Phantom Z. If you compare it to other brands in the market, you will see that it is the first Octa-core in the market, the first high ends smartphone with front flash camera. We are not following others, we are creating, and we are innovating.
Mobile phone success in Africa, Nigeria
As I said, the success of TECNO has been built by Nigerians. We give an answer to a particular need, we bring the best technology in this market and give affordable price, and we give Nigerians a choice between large families of products. When you choose TECNO Mobile, you are sure to find the right product for the right price.
We choose to be fair with customers; we choose to do the best we can, to allow anybody in Nigeria to communicate with their family, friends, without having to save money several months before being able to buy smart phone. Now every Nigeria, even in the rural area can communicate.
CSR activities in Nigeria:
App Challenge
In 2013, Tecno collaborated with Co-Creation Hub, CCHub, in Lagos, to motivate, develop and reward Mobile Phone application developers in Nigeria.
This was done by organizing mobile phone app development context where many app developers participated. Three of the contestants won cash prizes of N1m, N500, 000 and N250, 000 naira respectively.
There were also 10 consolatory prizes for other participants and each of them received Tecno smartphones.
Computer Village Cleaning:
On the other hand, Tecno organized and carried out a cleaning exercise in their immediate business environment tagged ‘’Tecno Talk and Clean Campaign’’. During this exercise, members of Tecno staff and some other professional cleaners were engaged in the cleaning of Computer Village in Ikeja.
They swept Computer Village streets, cleared the drainages, and also collaborated with Lagos State Waste Management Agency to remove all refuse collected during the cleaning exercise
Visit to orphanages in Lagos
In December 2013, Tecno visited two orphanages in Lagos; SOS Children’s Home at Isolo and Little Saints Orphanage at Akowonjo. During the visit, various items such as food, towels, school bags, writing pens, diaries, etc were donated to these orphanages.
Community Support
Tecno has also supported the various associations in Computer Village in various events at various times.
Sponsorship of school and campus events
We have been very active in the support and sponsorship of Campus events in the past 2 years. Recently, we were one of the sponsors of Miss UNILAG and Miss LASU in Lagos State and we also promoted other events at YABATECH in Lagos. On other hand, we have also supported some secondary inter-house sports where different students won different Tecno prizes.
Support to Lagos State Trafic Police
During the construction of Lagos State Traffic Police Training Center, Tecno contributed towards the completion of the project located in Ikeja.
Support to Nigeria Hockey Federation:
In the recent past, Tecno also supported Nigeria Hockey Federation in Hockey National League Finals in Abuja. At the end of the championship different hockey players were rewarded with different Tecno products.
