A representative for the ruling Zanu-PF party also said he believed she was no longer in Zimbabwe. It comes after Zimbabwean army generals seized power and detained senior officials, including Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo, as part of a round-up of “criminals”. BREAKING: Zimbabwe military ‘seizes power’, Mugabe in "House Arrest"

Image
Zimbabwe’s military has taken over control of the country but the army generals said they have not staged  a coup yet and that President Robert Mugabe is safe. According to reports, the generals used state television on Tuesday night to vow to target “criminals” close to Mugabe. Mugabe’s decades-long grip on power was dramatically weakened as military vehicles blocked roads outside the parliament in Harare and senior soldiers delivered a late-night television address to the nation. “We wish to assure the nation that his excellency the president… and his family are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed,” Major General Sibusiso Moyo said, slowly reading out a statement. “We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes… As soon as we have accomplished our mission we expect that the situation will return to normalcy.” Moyo said “this is not a military takeover of government”. But the generals’ actions posed a major challenge to the ageing Mug

Super Eagles Stuns Argentina

Image
When the draws for the 2018 World Cup take place next month in Russia, none of the seeded teams will want to be in the same group as Nigeria after the Super Eagles put four goals past Argentina on Tuesday night in Krasnodar. The game finished 4-2 in favour of Gernot Rohr’s boys, but it was not looking good for the Super Eagles early on in the Russian city after going 2-0 down to Jorge Sampaoli’s side courtesy of goals by Ever Banega and Sergio Agüero. But a brilliantly struck 45th-minute free-kick by Kelechi Iheanacho and three additional goals in the second half, including a brace by Alex Iwobi in-between a debut goal by Bryan Idowu, would have sent jitters down the spines of all the countries seeded above the Super Eagles ahead of the December 1 World Cup draw in Moscow. After Daniel Akpeyi had in a moment of temporary insanity handled the ball outside his penalty area, Banega punished him for his error by curling home the resultant free-kick. That was in the 27th minute.

Biafra: Keyamo mocks IPOB over Nnamdi Kanu’s sack

Image
Human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo has taunted the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, over its announcement that it had sacked Nnamdi Kanu as director of Radio Biafra. Keyamo wondered why IPOB, who had alleged that Kanu was killed by Nigerian army, was still announcing his removal ‘in the grave’. Naija Yarns gathered that, Radio Biafra upon resumption on Monday announced through one Ifeoma Okorafor that the radio was restructuring. She announced that, “Mazi Nnamdi Nwanekaenyi Kanu, the former Director of Radio Biafra is hereby dismissed and removed as Director of Radio Biafra following extensive and intensive consultations”   “Kanu’s actions and his decisions to incite members of IPOB towards violence leading to the death of many innocent young people in Onitsha, Aba and Umuahia is totally unacceptable and grossly irresponsible. “Kanu privately collected £14 million and another $22 million to purchase landed properties abroad in his na

Ikoyi cash: We refused to pay whistleblower because he would go mad – Presidency

Image
The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has stated that the Federal Government does not want the whistle-blower who informed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of the N13bn in an Ikoyi apartment to run mad. According to him, the FG deliberately delayed the payment because he needed to be adequately counselled before such amount would be handed over to him. Sagay said if the commission, which the whistle-blower claims is N860m, was given to him immediately, he probably would have squandered it within a month or two. The presidential adviser told Punch that, “What I gathered from my inquiry is that the man is not sufficiently stable to receive such a huge sum of money. He is like someone who will almost run mental when he gets the money and will use it in an irresponsible manner, attracting not only undesirable people but even danger to himself. “I think what they wanted to do for him was to provide counsellors.
