Sevilla Head Coach Manager Eduardo Berizzo’s Diagnosed with Cancer
Sevilla have released a statement confirming that manager Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The Spanish side released the statement on Wednesday morning, less than 12 hours after their 3-3 draw at home to Liverpool in the Champions League.
The full statement reads:
“The medical services of Sevilla FC report that the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the prostate . The future examinations will allow to decide which are the steps to follow regarding their treatment.“The Sevilla FC wants to show their full support for his coach right now and wishes him a speedy recovery.”
It was widely reported on Tuesday night that Berizzo informed his players of at half time at the Sanchez Pizjuan. Then 3-0 down, the players responded in the perfect manner and battled their way to a 3-3 draw against the Premier League outfit.
After the match (but before Sevilla had confirmed the news), midfielder Ever Banega told the media that the players’ second half showing and attitude was down to their manager:
“We had to come out (after being 3-0 down at the break) with a different attitude, for the fans, who have always supported us, and also the coach, who has reversed our situation.“He’s the biggest fan we have. He has taken us on the right path and we’re with him all the way.”
Sevilla will guarantee progression to the last 16 of the Champions League with victory against Maribor next month, but will qualify anyway if Spartak Moscow fail to beat Liverpool at Anfield.
